Included in TSB since 2008
While reading about Berlin’s annual art festival, New Life Berlin in May 2008, I stumbled across a project that was involved called The Sandwich Box. I was fascinated by this ongoing ‘travellers secret box’ – as it was originally called – and by how simple and playful it’s essential concept was: the exchange between artists internationally centered around one common denominator – a shared material, in this case a lysthus/tent.
As a theatre artist living in New York City and having been involved in projects in Washington D.C., Austin and Houston Texas, and England – I am always looking for projects that evoke community and collaboration. So, it took little time for me to leap to the idea of using the Sandwich Box and lysthus in a live performance / play in Brooklyn, NY – just outside of the city.
I was fortunate to convince Lars that this was a worthwhile project and for the fall of 2008, our company – the Aztec Economy – produced 4 secret late night shows just outside of NYC in a chilly courtyard. Our playwright composed an original play – around 60 min in length – and we had a cast of 5 with live music composed and underscored for the entire piece.
The Sandwich Box also has a set of aphorisms that provide a terrific ‘entry point’ to associate oneself as an artist or art group to this ongoing endeavor. I encourage any artist that is interested, to browse through this website to read more about the other projects and be inspired by the reflections and work that is still evolving.
I’d like to thank Lars and the others involved with TSB (Karen, Tulle, Anni, Jacob, Sanne) and all the artists who have worked with TSB previously for being committed to such a fun-spirited and original project.
